Supporting Every Learner Through Inclusive Art Experiences

Inclusive, meaningful art experiences are now more accessible for elementary students across Olentangy Schools thanks to an Olentangy Education Foundation (OEF) grant supporting Specialized Learning Center (SLC) students in the art room.

With the OEF grant funding, Liberty Tree Elementary School Art Teacher and recent MaryAnn Howey Award of Excellence honoree Jonathan Juravich purchased specialized and adaptive art materials designed to meet the diverse needs of students in SLC classrooms.

Through the grant, elementary art teachers across the entire district were equipped with sensory-friendly and adaptive tools such as ergonomic brushes, textured paper, adaptive scissors, and other materials that support accessibility and student independence. These tools were intentionally organized into accessible centers and mobile carts within each art classroom, allowing students and their intervention aides to engage with the materials independently and confidently.

“This initiative has gone far beyond a one-time experience,” shared Jonathan Juravich. “It’s created a lasting shift in the department’s instructional focus.”

In addition to classroom materials, the grant supported ongoing professional learning for elementary art teachers across the district. Collaborative efforts, including an Ashland course, professional development days, and continued Professional Learning Community (PLC) meetings, have allowed teachers to deepen their collective commitment to supporting all learners through art.

Teachers have reported increased student engagement, stronger creative expression, and greater confidence among students who now have tools specifically designed for their needs. By empowering educators with both resources and training, the grant has helped ensure that every student can fully participate in the creative process.

“Thank you to the MaryAnn Howey Art Fund and the Olentangy Education Foundation for their continued commitment to inclusive education and meaningful learning experiences for all students,” said Juravich.
