Olentangy Education Foundation Celebrates Community Partnerships at Annual VIP Event

The Olentangy Education Foundation (OEF) recently hosted its annual VIP Event, an evening dedicated to celebrating the partnerships and community support that make innovative opportunities for Olentangy teachers and students possible. Held at Little Bear Golf Club, the event brought together community leaders, educators, and supporters to reflect on the Foundation’s impact and recognize individuals whose dedication has strengthened educational opportunities throughout the district.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Maryann Howey Award of Excellence, an honor recognizing individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to supporting Olentangy students and educators. This year’s recipients were Jonathan Juravich and Sue Mahler.

Jonathan Juravich, head art teacher at Liberty Tree Elementary and leader of the district’s elementary art programs, was recognized for his longstanding contributions to the arts in Olentangy Schools. Juravich began his career in the district over 15 years ago as a traveling art teacher when Olentangy had only four elementary schools. Over the years, he has played a key role in developing the district’s strong and vibrant elementary art program. Juravich was also instrumental in securing the Maryann Howey Elementary Art Fund, established by Clair Howey in honor of his wife, Maryann. The fund provides an additional $5,000 each year to every elementary school to support art programming and creative opportunities for students. He is also an author and host of Drawing with Mr. J on WOSU. He won the Ohio Teacher of the Year Award in 2018 and the National Elementary Art Teacher of the Year Award in 2023.

“We are thrilled to celebrate Dr. Juravich and his continued impact in our community,” said Mary Lorenz, OEF Executive Director. “His dedication to sparking creativity and supporting innovation in his classroom is inspiring and a testament to our shared mission of empowering students through exceptional educational opportunities.”

Mary Lorenz (Executive Director) and Julie Feasel (OEF Board President) were able to present the award to Jonathan in front of his 5th grade art class.

Sue Mahler was honored for her many years of leadership and advocacy on behalf of Olentangy students and schools. Mahler has served on numerous district committees, supported school levies, and played an important role in the Olentangy Education Foundation’s growth. As a member of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees and its first Development Director, she helped build meaningful community partnerships that continue to support OEF’s work today.

Julie was able to present the award to Sue in front of the Women Giving Together group, in which both Sue and Julie serve on.

The VIP Event serves as OEF’s way of thanking the businesses, organizations, and individuals whose generosity helps fund innovative classroom grants and educational programs across the district. Through these partnerships, OEF continues to support teachers and create new opportunities for students throughout Olentangy Schools.
