Music Therapy Brings Joy to Students in the SLC at Scioto Ridge Elementary

The Olentangy Education Foundation (OEF) is proud to support innovative learning experiences across the district — including a recent grant bringing music therapy to students in the Specialized Learning Center (SLC) at Scioto Ridge Elementary School.

According to the American Music Therapy Association, Inc. publication on Music Therapy in Special Education, music therapy can provide a wide range of benefits for students with disabilities. These benefits may include improvements in gross motor skills and social skills, encouragement of vocalization and speech, opportunities for self-expression, and even a decrease in agitation — helping students transition to a state of calmness.

OEF recently had the delight of visiting the SLC classroom to witness the impact of this grant firsthand. As the music therapist entered the room, students cheered and looked excited in anticipation of the session. Once the music began, smiles spread across faces as children engaged enthusiastically with the teacher, bright visuals, and lively songs. The classroom is filled with rhythm, color, and connection.

Scioto Ridge Elementary Intervention Specialist Nathan Traini shared the profound impact these sessions have had on students:

“The music therapist’s sessions have become vital for our classroom. The students eagerly look forward to them, enjoying structured interactions with music and instruments in their own unique ways. This fosters a sense of togetherness as a whole group, while also encouraging independence and self-expression. Additionally, it’s been invaluable for teachers and support staff to observe the students in ways that differ from the typical classroom setting. This allows everyone to better understand how students may interact differently and gives the school team a clearer perspective on fostering even more independence for the students.”

One especially joyful highlight is the parachute activity. As the parachute lifts high into the air and gently floats back down, the room fills with laughter and wide-eyed wonder. Traini reflected:

“One of the most joyful moments in our music therapy sessions happens when the parachute lifts high into the air and gently floats back down. In that instant, the room fills with genuine smiles, laughter, and wide-eyed expressions of wonder. For many of our students, these shared musical experiences have become powerful opportunities for connection, engagement, and self-expression. Each child participates in their own unique way, whether through movement, eye contact, vocalization, or simply remaining present in the activity, and every form of participation is celebrated by our team. These small but meaningful moments remind us that music therapy is not just an activity; it is a bridge to joy, communication, and belonging for students who benefit deeply from inclusive, sensory-rich experiences.”

OEF is honored to fund opportunities like this that foster belonging, growth, and joy for Olentangy students. This impactful grant was made possible through a valued partnership with Fanning Howey Associates, whose support helps bring meaningful educational experiences to life. Thank you to Intervention Specialist Nathan Traini and Intervention Aide Mary Eisel for co-authoring the grant.
