Thanks to the generosity of the Barb Cape family and the community who respected her, Olentangy teachers were able to participate in the Barb Cape Scholar Series for the first time during this past school year. This series of workshops focused on supporting all students and understanding families from a variety of socioeconomic levels.
Each teacher received a copy of A Framework of Understanding Poverty written by Ruby Payne. Kim Ellis, a colleague of the author, presented to the entire staff during September's Curriculum Day. She addressed how we can meet all students' needs, given their diverse background experiences. The teachers read the book and participated in book groups at their building, throughout the school year, discussing strategies to support students academically and socially.
Olentangy staff members appreciate the generosity of this gift of professional development honoring the memory of Mrs. Barb Cape, who consistently advocated for the needs of this school district.
The 2008-09 Barb Cape Series will include staff education and training on Formative Assessment in the classroom.
